NYU Divest!

students at WSP sexton rallyThe very impressive students at NYU Divest took a big step forward yesterday.  They met with NYU President John Sexton and Exec. VP Martin Dorph and came away with several key understandings:

  • NYU Divest will be on the University Senate agenda first thing in the Fall, and will be guaranteed a participatory role in developing the proposal for divestment. The issue will be referred to the Senate’s Financial Affairs Committee, and a special working group on divestment will be set up just to work on this so that the issue gets the time and effort it deserves.
  • Marty Dorph, who chairs the Committee, will be working personally with NYU Divest this summer to frame the issue for the working group so that they can get right to work in the Fall.
  • Sexton agreed to put NYU Divest in contact with a Trustee member who sits on the Board of Trustees’ Financial Affairs Committee. The issue won’t be on the Trustees’ agenda until the Univ. Senate passes a recommendation, but NYU Divest will begin developing a relationship with the Board now.

The Divestment Movement has been gathering steam throughout the US.  The contribution from NYU Divest will be palpable.  Led by student Sophie Lasoff and her talented team, with the indispensable support of Professor Julianne Lutz Warren, this group is making things happen!  I was proud to have been asked to say a few words yesterday at the rally in Washington Square Park that preceded the meeting with John Sexton.
